The tenure of NUJS, Kolkata Vice-Chancellor Prof Ishwara Bhat has been extended, as first reported by Legally India.

Speaking to Bar & Bench, Prof Bhat confirmed the extension of his tenure, which was due to come to an end on November 30 of this year. He also confirmed that his second consecutive tenure would last until he reaches the age of 65 years.

Prof Bhat was appointed as VC of NUJS back in 2011. Before that, Bhat was at University of Mysore from 1984 to November 2011, where he was appointed Dean of Faculty of Law for three terms and Acting Vice-Chancellor for four months. He had also taught in Karnatak University Dharwad and MK Law College Hassan from 1979 to 1984.

The extension of his tenure comes at a time when an ex-Registrar was dismissed from the University after being found guilty of mismanagement of funds. It has been a turbulent tenure for Prof Bhat, with flaws in the administration being pointed out in the recent past. In 2013, two separate petitions were filed by the faculty and the students of NUJS, to bring to attention the falling academic standards at the University.
