Collegium reiterates proposal of two Advocates for elevation to Gauhati High Court

Shruti Mahajan

The Supreme Court Collegium has resolved to reiterate the recommendation of two Advocates as the Judges of the Gauhati High Court.

After the proposal to elevate Advocates Sanjay Kumar Medhi and Nani Tagia to the Bench of the Gauhati High Court was sent back to the Supreme Court Collegium for reconsideration, the Collegium has reiterated these names for elevation.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi, however, did not participate in the Collegium proceedings for the purpose of considering the recommendation of Advocate Nani Tagia given that Tagia had practised as a Junior to Justice Gogoi when he was a lawyer. Justice Gogoi had refrained from participating in the proceedings for Tagia’s consideration back on April 6 as well when the recommendations were first made.

The recommendation of these names made by the Collegium in the resolution passed on April 6 this year was sent back to the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra for reconsideration. However, the Collegium has noted in its resolution dated August 8 that the two members of the Bar in question are found suitable for elevation.

The resolution notes that the proposal of these names was given concurrence to by the Constitutional authorities of the State of Arunachal Pradesh as well.

Effectively, vide the new resolution, the Collegium has reiterated the proposal of these two members of the Bar to be elevated to the Bench.
