Trilegal Competition Law Head Nisha Kaur Uberoi becomes first Indian lawyer to be named "Dealmaker of the Year" at GCR Awards

The prestigious awards recognizing the international antitrust community were announced on April 30, 2021.

Partner and National Head of the Competition Law practice at Trilegal Nisha Kaur Uberoi has been named as ‘Dealmaker of the Year’ at the 11th Annual Global Competition Review (GCR) Awards 2021.

Uberoi is the first Indian lawyer to receive this prestigious global award.

Speaking to Bar & Bench on the award, Uberoi said,

“I am extremely honoured and humbled to become the first Indian lawyer to receive the prestigious Global Competition Review Dealmaker of the Year award.

I would like to thank my family, my outstanding team at Trilegal, our clients and the Competition Commission of India. This award is an acknowledgment of the evolution of the Indian economy which today witnesses the most complex merger control transactions."

Under her supervision of the Competition Law practice, Trilegal became the first Indian law firm to be awarded ‘Regional Firm of the Year – Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa’ at the 10th Annual GCR Awards in 2020.

In 2020, Uberoi advised on several complex deals and obtained the Competition Commission of India’s approval of the following deals:

  • USD 50 billion merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and Groupe Peugeot SA;

  • USD 45 billion merger between International Flavors & Fragrances Inc and DuPont’s Nutrition & Biosciences Business; and

  • USD 8.3 billion acquisition by ZF Friedrichshafen AG of WABCO Holdings Inc which was cleared with divestitures in Phase I.


She also advised Intel and Qualcomm as part of the USD 21.7 billion spate of investments in Jio Platforms Limited.

A graduate of National Law School of India University, Bangalore, Uberoi started her career with Amarchand Mangaldas in 2002. After a stint in Singapore, she rejoined Amarchand Mangaldas In 2011 and headed the Mumbai competition practice. She moved to AZB & Partners in 2016 to co-head its competition practice and thereafter to Trilegal to set up and head its competition practice in 2017.
