The Delhi High Court recently directed Delhi University to proceed with the admission of two students from the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category subject to payment of fees within 10 days [Isha Tanwar (Minor) & Anr. V/s Delhi University & Ors.].

The two students had secured admission at DU's School of Open Learning. However, they were unable to pay the fees within the timeline set by DU due to lack of funds. 

They moved the High Court seeking directions to extend the deadline to pay the fee. 

Justice Jyoti Singh allowed the students to deposit fee within ten days and further directed Delhi University to process their admission.

“Considering the special facts and circumstances that Petitioners have qualified for admission to B.A.(H.) English with History (Minor) Course for academic session 2025-2026 and have been offered admission as also considering that they belong to BPL category and the B.A. Course is through Open Learning, this writ petition is allowed permitting the Petitioners to deposit the fees within 10 days from today. In case the fee is deposited within 10 days, Respondent No. 1 shall carry out the necessary formalities for admission,” the Court stated in its order of November 24.

Further, the Court also clarified that the order was passed keeping in mind the special facts of this case and it should not be treated as a precedent in other similar cases.
