Former Punjab & Haryana High Court Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal has been appointed as the president of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).

He has been appointed for a period of five years or till attaining the age of 67 years, whichever is earlier.

He succeeds Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar who served as NCLT President with effect from November 1, 2021 and demitted office earlier this year.

Born on March 10, 1964, Justice Grewal hails from an agriculturist family in Punjab's Ludhiana district.

He began his legal practice at the Punjab & Haryana High Court in 1992. He held several positions in the Punjab government’s law offices, including Assistant Advocate General (1995–1997), Deputy Advocate General (1997–2002), Senior Deputy Advocate General (2002–2005) and Additional Advocate General.

He later served as Central Government Counsel and Senior Panel Counsel, and appeared in significant constitutional, service, arbitration and public law matters for the Union of India.

He was elevated as an additional judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court on September 25, 2014. He was briefly transferred to the Rajasthan High Court, where he was confirmed as a permanent judge in May 2016. He was subsequently repatriated to the Punjab & Haryana High Court in October 2016.

He retired as judge on March 10, 2026.

The absence of a permanent president for NCLT after the retirement of Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar, and the appointment of two acting presidents subsequent to that had triggered a series of litigation before Delhi High Court and Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). Those petitions were filed by one of the NCLT members claiming that he was overlooked for appointment as acting president despite his seniority.

The CAT had dismissed his petition and plea against the same is pending before the Delhi High Court.
