The Indian Law Society (ILS) and ILS Law College have moved the Bombay High Court challenging the communication by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) that recommended an approximately 88% reduction in the "Other Activities Fees" and 77% reduction in total fees payable by students.
A Bench of Justices RI Chagla and Farhan Dubash is slated to hear the matter on June 18.
The petitioners have requested that they be allowed to charge the same "other fees" of approximately ₹37,000 as charged in the previous academic year.
As per the plea, SPPU and its fee fixation committee have imposed an unreasonable amount of ₹4,340 as "other fees" and that in the absence of a proposal submitted by the college for the same, the action is without jurisdiction or authority of law.
The Society and College have alleged that the amount prescribed by the fee fixation committee is abysmally low, compelling the institution to be run in severe losses and threatening its very existence.
Notably, a 2025 Right to Information (RTI) query had revealed that between 2019 and 2024, ILS had collected roughly ₹29.6 crore under the unauthorised "other fees" heads with only about ₹4 crore actually utilised towards student welfare.
The College has sought quashing of the fee fixation committee's communication along with a declaration that it is entitled to charge ₹36,790 as "other fees" without prejudice to their right for upward revision.
They have also sought, pending disposal of the plea, protection from any coercive action including exclusion from the Common Entrance Test (CET) admission process for the academic year 2026-27.
