Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju was sworn in as Karnataka High Court judge on Tuesday.

The oath was administered by Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the transfer of Justice Ganju from Delhi High Court in August this year. The Central government on notified the transfer on October 14

The transfer of Justice Ganju had faced strong opposition from members of the Bar. The DHCBA, DHCBA women lawyers, as well as several other members of the Bar had written to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai voicing their opposition to Justice Ganju's transfer.

Born in 1971, Justice Ganju obtained her Bachelor of Law degree in 1995 from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. She later continued her education in law in the United Kingdom, receiving the British Chevening scholarship in 1999.

In legal practice since 1995, she worked primarily before the High Court. She advised and undertook matters in a wide range of legal areas including property, inheritance law, civil laws, arbitration, company, criminal and intellectual property litigation under the original, appellate and writ jurisdictions of the courts at Delhi and its neighbouring jurisdictions.

She was appointed as a judge of the Delhi High Court on May 18, 2022.

Her farewell ceremony at the Delhi High Court was witness to emotional scenes on Monday when Justice Ganju was reduced to tears as she watched her daughter weep during her farewell speech.

While she was thanking her mother and her daughter for their support throughout her career, Justice Ganju spotted her daughter crying. Mid-way through her speech, she smiled to assuage her daughter and said,

“If you cry, I will cry.”
