Senior Advocate Billwadal Bhattacharya appointed Additional Advocate General of West Bengal

Bhattacharya was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Calcutta High Court in November 2024

Senior Advocate Billwadal Bhattacharya has been appointed as an Additional Advocate General of West Bengal.

He is the second AAG to be appointed this week. Earlier, Senior Advocate Rajdeep Mazumder was Additional Advocate General.

The appointments have been made pursuant to the BJP coming to power in West Bengal.

Bhattacharya was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Calcutta High Court in November 2024. His name figured in the list of 81 advocates designated as Senior Advocates after a Full Court meeting of the High Court held on November 21, 2024.

Before his designation, Bhattacharya had served as Deputy Solicitor General of India for the Calcutta High Court till 2024.

Reports at the time said that Bhattacharya had appeared for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in several matters before the Calcutta High Court, including cases connected to the West Bengal teacher recruitment scam.

He has also appeared in several politically significant matters in West Bengal.

In recent proceedings before the Calcutta High Court concerning the entry of security personnel into the West Bengal Assembly premises, Bhattacharya appeared for Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. He argued that the issue was whether constitutional provisions could be suspended through an administrative letter issued from the Speaker’s office

 Earlier, Senior Advocates Nilanjan Bhattacharyya and Dibyendra Narayan Ray were appointed as enior Standing Counsel and Government Pleader respectively.
