Social media influencer Shamik Adhikary, popularly known by his online name “Nonsane,” was remanded to police custody by a Kolkata court on February 6 as police continue to probe allegations of rape, illegal detention and assault.

Adhikary was arrested on Thursday evening from the Dum Dum area of Kolkata following a complaint by a 22-year-old woman at Behala Police Station.

The complaint alleged that he had confined her at his residence and subjected her to physical assault, threatened her and inappropriately touched her after a disagreement.

Alipore court heard arguments from both the police and the defence, before granting the police more time to question him in custody.

The judge noted the investigation was still at an early stage and observed the seriousness of the allegations, remanding Adhikary to police custody until February 16.

Police also told the court that the woman’s statement before a magistrate is yet to be recorded and that her medical examination was still pending.

The Police had initially registered the case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNH), including wrongful confinement, physical assault, outraging a woman’s dignity and criminal intimidation.

However, after further questioning and a review of early findings, a rape charge was later added.

The complainant was represented by advocates Moyukh Mukherjee, Gopal Halder, Subrata Sardar, Barun Kanti Som, Prasenjit Halder and Chandril Chattopadhyay.
