Two teachers of the Kannur dental college who were booked in connection with the suicide of first-year student Nithin Raj, have moved a court in Kerala seeking anticipatory bail.

19-year old Nithin Raj was found critically injured after allegedly jumping from a building near the college on April 10. He succumbed to his injuries later the same day. According to reports, he was subjected to casteist harassment by two of his teachers, prompting him to take his own life.

The police registered a case head of the dental anatomy department Dr MK Ram and associate professor of the same department, KT Sangeetha Nambiar under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3(1)(r) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act (SC/ST Act), for deliberately insulting.

Following massive public outrage, protests and calls for action, the two teachers moved the Thalassery Sessions Court seeking anticipatory bail.

According to reports, the Court today refused to grant them any interim protection and posted the matter for hearing on April 22.
