The Supreme Court Collegium has passed resolutions recommending the names of two advocates and one judicial officer to be appointed as judges of the Calcutta High Court.

The Collegium in its resolution has deferred the name of one of the judicial officers for reconsideration.

The advocates whose names were recommended for elevation are Aniruddha Roy and Saugata Bhattacharyya. These recommendations were made by the High Court Collegium on March 26 this year.

In April this year, the then Acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court also recommended two judicial officers – Suvra Ghosh and Rabindranath Samanta – for elevation to the High Court. Of these recommendations, the Collegium has found Ghosh to be suitable for the appointment, and has deferred the recommendation of Samanta for reconsideration by the Collegium “after some time”.

The Supreme Court Collegium’s decision to recommend the names of individuals for elevation came after an assessment of merit, scrutiny of the file, and material placed on record by the Department of Justice and after holding interactions with those recommended.
