The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a petition by one G Sarvan Kumar seeking his appointment as a High Court judge [G Sarvan Kumar v. The Registrar, Telangana High Court].
The matter was listed for the first time today before a Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai and Justice Vinod Chandran.
The Court flatly refused to entertain the plea, terming it a mockery of the system. It also questioned whether the petitioner was calling on the Bench to summon a Collegium meeting to discuss his plea.
"Do you want us to call the first three judges of this court here and hold a collegium meeting now? ... You are making a mockery of the system!" CJI Gavai said.
The Court further hinted that it would impose costs on the petitioner for filing such a petition.
"When have we heard petitions regarding the appointment of a High Court judge? How much cost should we impose?"
The lawyer then sought permission to withdraw the plea.
The CJI, in turn, remarked that the lawyer's licence to practice the law itself should be withdrawn for filing such petitions in the first place.
"Sanad (license to practice law) should be withdrawn ... for filing such pleas," he said.
The plea was ultimately withdrawn with the Court's permission.
