The Central government on Saturday cleared the appointment of three lawyers as additional judges to the Calcutta High Court. .The following are the lawyers who have been appointed as judges:- Smita Das De;- Reetobroto Kumar Mitra;- Om Narayan RaiArjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of Law and Justice (Independent Charge) took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the appointments. .The three appointees were among five Advocates recommended for judgeship by the Supreme Court collegium on February 28.Two other lawyers, Md Talay Masood Siddiqui and Krishnaraj Thaker, were also recommended by the Collegium for appointment but their names have not been cleared yet..As on February 1, the Calcutta High Court is functioning with 43 judges as against a sanctioned strength of 72, a vacancy position of 29.
