In a hearing on Friday at the Madras High Court, a petitioner sought the removal of cellphone towers, claiming that the radiation emitted from these towers could reduce one's life expectancy..Acting Chief Justice (ACJ) T Raja countered the argument by stating that the radiations were already in the lawyer's body by virtue of him carrying phones.."How many cellphones are you carrying right now? One in upper pocket, one in lower. Radiations are in your body now!" the Court said..ACJ Raja then pointed out that cellphones and towers are present in every country and continent, including Africa, North America, South America, and Asia..Notably, in June 2019, Justice N Anand Venkatesh of the Madras High Court had observed that apprehensions on the effect of radiation from cellphone towers was without scientific backing. "This Court has consistently taken the view that no one can be prevented from erecting the cell phone towers on a mere apprehension about the effect of radiation from the cell phone tower. The apprehension does not have a scientific backing. Till a positive finding is given in this regard, cell phone towers cannot be prevented to be installed on mere apprehensions," he had said..In that light, the Court had granted police protection to Reliance Jio to erect cellphone towers.
