The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a public interest litigation (PIL) petition seeking directions to the Central government and States to ban establishment of any mosque in the name of Babur or Babri Masjid.

A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta declined to entertain the petition filed by one Devkinandan alias Devki Nandan Pandey.

The petitioner then proceeded to withdraw the plea.

The PIL sought directions to the Centre and States to ban the construction, establishment or naming of any mosque or religious structure in the name of Babur or Babri Masjid or any other derivative names across India.

It contended that no structure should be constructed in the "name of a person who came as invader in our country".
