The Supreme Court on Wednesday remarked that it has been making efforts since the previous day to persuade members of the Bar to cooperate and continue court proceedings during the vacation..Justice Surya Kant said during a hearing,"We are struggling since yesterday only to convince bar to please work during vacation, we want to work.".The remark came after he inquired whether Senior Advocate Aryama Sundaram would be available in the first week of the court vacation. When counsel informed the Bench that he might not be, Justice Kant observed that the judges were willing to work, but were struggling to get similar support from the Bar. “We want to work,” he said.Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati suggested that the matter could be kept on the list. At this point, Justice Dipankar Datta noted that it was not technically vacation now, to which Justice Kant added that the current schedule reflected a “partial working day.”.The exchange took a lighter turn when Justice Kant asked,"Mr. Gopal Subramanium is here?"A counsel responded wryly, calling it a “leading question,” prompting laughter in the courtroom..Earlier in the day, Chief Justice of India BR Gavai made a similar remark that while lawyers are reluctant to work during court vacations, it is the judiciary that is often blamed for the growing backlog of cases.“The first five judges are sitting through the vacation and continuing to work, yet we are blamed for the backlog. In reality, it is the lawyers who are unwilling to work during the vacations,” the CJI said..The Supreme Court's summer vacation is scheduled to begin on May 26 and will continue till July 14.On May 17, the Court issued a notification listing 21 vacation benches that will be functioning during this period..[Read Live Coverage]
