The Supreme Court Collegium has passed a resolution recommending that fourteen additional judges of the Bombay High Court be appointed as permanent judges.
The judges so recommended are Justices Sandeep K Shinde, Rohit Baban Deo, Bharati H Dangre, Sarang V Kotwal, Riyaz Chagla, Manish Pitale, SK Kotwal, AD Upadhye, Mangesh S Patil, AM Dhavale, PK Chavan, MG Giratkar, VV Kankanwadi, and SM Gavhane.
The Bombay High Court Collegium had recommended the above judges to be made permanent in a resolution passed on December 7 last year. The State governments of Maharashtra and Goa had assented to the same.
And now, after due deliberation, the Supreme Court Collegium has given the green signal to make all fourteen judges permanent, despite receiving complaints against some of the names from the Union Law Ministry’s Department of Justice.
All fourteen judges were appointed as Additional judges of the Bombay High Court in June 2017. Their term was set to expire in June this year.
Should the Centre confirm the Collegium’s recommendation, the Bombay High Court will have 65 permanent judges and 5 additional judges. There are currently 24 vacancies at the High Court.
