Former Gauhati HC Chief Justice RS Mongia passes away

RS Mongia, former Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, passed away today. He was 77.

Justice Mongia was elevated as a judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court in June 1990. In 2001, he was transferred to the Gauhati High Court as Acting Chief Justice. The following year, he would assume charge as Chief Justice of the High Court.

Five years after his retirement, he was appointed Chairman of the Punjab State Human Rights Commission. Later, he was appointed head of the Commission to ascertain compensation to the victims of the 2009 riots in Punjab.

His cremation ceremony will take place on Tuesday, August 22 at 3 pm, at Chandigarh.
