The Karnataka High Court on April 9 issued notice and sought the response of KR Pura BJP MLA Byrathi Basavaraj on a plea filed by the State seeking cancellation of the bail granted to him by a special court in a murder case.
Single-judge Justice S Sunil Dutt Yadav heard State Additional Public Prosecutor BN Jagadish seeking cancellation of the bail.
It then proceeded to issue notice to Basavaraj and posted the case for further consideration on April 16.
The MLA is the fifth accused in the murder of rowdy-sheeter Bikul Shiva who was killed by several assailants on July 15, 2025 in connection with a land dispute.
The MLA is alleged to have been in touch with the prime accused, rowdy-sheeter Jagadish, who was an alleged rival of Biklu Shiva in the real estate industry.
Earlier in February, Basavaraj had approached the Supreme Court seeking anticipatory bail which was dismissed.
The trial court later granted bail to him on the ground that the material cited against Basavaraj to implicate him in the murder case did not appear to be strong. The trial court also said that it was not necessary to remand him for further custodial interrogation.
The same has now been challenged by the State before the High Court.
