The Madras High Court has granted an anti-piracy injunction to restrain the unauthorised upload, copying, transmission or release of the upcoming Ram Charan-starrer Telugu film Peddi on the internet [Vriddhi Cinemas Vs BSNL].

A vacation Bench comprising Justice V Lakshminarayanan passed the interim order in a copyright infringement suit filed by the producer of the movie, after hearing the matter last evening around 7.45 PM.

Peddi is a Telugu sports-action drama. The film is directed by Buchi Babu Sana and also features Janhvi Kapoor, Shiva Rajkumar and Jagapathi Babu in prominent roles. Its music is composed by AR Rahman. The movie is slated for theatrical release on June 4, 2026.

Its producer had moved the High Court seeking a permanent injunction against several defendants as well as unknown persons, to restrain them from illegally uploading the film online or facilitating its unauthorised copying, transmission, communication or release.

After perusing the plaint and documents, the Court noted that the plaintiff (producer) was the copyright owner of the film and had incurred substantial amounts towards its production and advertising.

In the event, unauthorizedly, the movie is released over internet, the plaintiff would be put to serious loss and prejudice,” the Court observed.

The Court, therefore, said it was satisfied that the plaintiff was entitled to an Ashok Kumar order.

An Ashok Kumar order is an injunction granted against unknown persons to prevent anticipated intellectual property infringement. Such orders are commonly passed in film piracy cases, where the identities of persons likely to upload or circulate pirated copies may not be known in advance.

The Court granted an interim injunction as prayed for, for a period of four weeks.

The matter will be heard next after four weeks.
