The Madras High Court on Wednesday granted an ad-interim anti-piracy injunction to protect the copyright in the upcoming Rani Mukherji-starrer Hindi film Mardaani 3 [Yashraj Films v. BSNL].

Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy has passed an interim order restraining the unauthorised broadcast, transmission, or dissemination of the film by internet service providers (ISPs) and cable television operators ahead of its theatrical release.

The Court observed that in matters involving pre-release piracy, irreversible injury is likely to occur if unauthorised broadcast is not restrained at the threshold.

At the same time, the Court noted that the expansive nature of anti-piracy injunctions could potentially impact the legitimate business interests of intermediaries and service providers.

Balancing these concerns, the Court directed that the injunction would operate subject to the producer furnishing an indemnity in favour of the respondents for any legitimate business losses arising from the operation of the order.

The interim order was passed on a suit filed by the film's producer, Yashraj Films. The producer cited concerns of the film's unlawful telecast or online circulation before and after its release.

Mardaani 3 is the third instalment in the Mardaani film series and stars Rani Mukerji in the role of a police officer, a character she portrayed in the earlier films released in 2014 and 2019. The film is directed by Abhiraj Minawala and is slated for theatrical release on January 30, 2026.

Recently, the Madras High Court passed an interim order restraining the unauthorised broadcast or dissemination of the Hindi film Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos.
