Justice GR Swaminathan of the Madras High Court on Saturday said that Sanatana Dharma must remain “in the heart” while discharging public duties.

He said that professional knowledge alone does not define a person’s role or character in public life.

Speaking at a function organised by the Dara Foundation at Chennai, Justice Swaminathan reflected on his remaining tenure as a judge and said the occasion had reinforced for him the responsibility to continue striving for excellence grounded in personal values.

At the event, Justice Swaminathan, along with former Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami distributed awards to individuals, recognising cultural and spiritual contribution.

I hopefully have four and a half years of service. In these four and a half years, I have to show excellence. I have to keep Sanatana Dharma in my heart,” he said.

He added that the programme had given him both an “idea and responsibility” going forward.

Justice Swaminathan said the awards presented by the Dara Foundation recognised excellence across diverse fields, and that the common thread among the awardees was not merely achievement, but humility and service.

He described the event as a “wonderful” occasion that brought together individuals who had demonstrated distinction in their respective domain.

“All the people who have won the award are doing that,” he said, referring to service and character as defining traits of those honoured.

According to him, the recognition reflected the values emphasised by the Foundation rather than only professional success

Referring to remarks made earlier by former Chief Election Commissioner Gopal Swamy, Justice Swaminathan said that subject knowledge and expertise, though necessary, were not sufficient to shape a complete personality.

“Subject and knowledge is needed. That alone does not bring a person’s personality fully. You have to serve others. You have to develop your character,” he said.

On the humility he observed among the awardees, Justice Swaminathan cited the example of Ilaiyaraaja’s grandson, noting that despite lineage and legacy, respect for others and absence of pride were clearly visible.

Justice Swaminathan said that such occasions served as reminders that public office and public recognition alike demand humility, service and a strong ethical foundation beyond professional competence.
