The Central Government has cleared the appointment of judicial officer Alok Kumar Verma as a judge of the Uttarakhand High Court.
Justice Verma has been appointed to serve as an additional judge of the High Court for a period of two years. The notification issued to this effect today states,
“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (I) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Alok Kumar Verma, to be an Additional Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court, for a period of two years with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”
With Verma’s appointment, the working strength of the Uttarakhand High Court rises to 10 judges, just one judge short of the sanctioned strength of 11 judges.
The appointment has been made pursuant to a Supreme Court Collegium resolution passed earlier this month.
Verma was recommended for elevation by the High Court Collegium on January 9, 2019. The Supreme Court Collegium had assessed the material on record regarding Verma, and also consulted colleagues conversant with the affairs of the High Court. Additionally, the Collegium also had an interaction with Alok Verma before finding him suitable for elevation as a judge of the High Court.
