Centre notifies appointment of Justice Sujoy Paul as Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court

The notification follows the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant in a meeting held on 9th January.

The Central government has notified the appointment of Calcutta High Court judge, Justice Sujoy Paul as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

The appointment follows the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant in a meeting held on January 09, 2026.

Justice Paul will assume charge as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court from the date he takes office. 

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the development via X.

Justice Paul has been the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court since September 2025.

He was appointed Acting Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court in January 2025.

Justice Paul was transferred from his parent court, the Madhya Pradesh High Court, to the Telangana High Court in 2024, based on a personal request.

Justice Paul began his legal career by enrolling with the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh in 1990. He practiced in civil, constitutional, industrial, service, and other areas of law before various courts.

He was appointed as a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court at Jabalpur on May 27, 2011, and became a permanent judge on April 14, 2014.

After his transfer, he took the oath as a judge of the Telangana High Court on March 26, 2024.
