Khaitan & Co ropes in Karun Cariappa for new Singapore office

The Singapore office is operational as a licensed foreign law practice in Singapore offering Indian law expertise.

Khaitan & Co has officially opened its Singapore office at Ocean Financial Centre, Raffles Place. The firm has hired Singapore-based lawyer Karun Cariappa as a Partner at the office.

A London School of Economics graduate, Cariappa previously worked with the erstwhile Amarchand Mangaldas, before moving to Jones Day in 2014. He went on to work for various firms in Singapore and Hong Kong, including Simmons & Simmons and Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP. Prior to joining Khaitan, he was a Consultant at Fernbank Holdings.

With over two decades of experience in Capital Markets and Transactions work, Cariappa has also started an entrepreneurial venture advising high net worth Individuals, family offices and VC funds on a range of matters.

Khaitan's Executive Director - Human Resources Amar Sinhji said,

“The addition of Karun Cariappa will give added fillip to the roll out of our operations in Singapore. He comes with a very strong local base and understanding of the market there. We are looking at Singapore as a long term play and the build up of our team will be done keeping that in mind.”

Anuj Shah (Partner, M&A and Private Client Practice), Karun Cariappa (Partner, Tech M&A and Venture Capital) and Jean Muller (Director, Strategy) will serve as the firm’s resident representatives in Singapore.

The key focus areas of the Singapore office will be to advise and assist clients on matters concerning Indian laws. The areas will include cross-border M&A transactions, private and public investments; advising high net worth Indian families where the service areas will include international tax and succession planning; and leading and participating in international arbitration involving Indian law.

Khaitan had announced its plan to open an office in Singapore in March this year, following the lead of Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas.
