Former Bombay High Court judge, Justice Dr S Radhakrishnan, passed away on Tuesday at Lilavati hospital following complications from surgery. He was 78 years old.
He will be cremated tomorrow at Kherwadi Smasan Bhoomi, Bandra East at 1 PM.
Born on December 25, 1946, Justice Radhakrishnan stood first in his LL.M. course from Mumbai University.
He enrolled as an advocate in 1971 and quickly made a name for himself in the Bombay High Court, where he practiced in a range of legal fields including constitutional, civil, labor and criminal law.
His specialty was in civil writs often involving complex constitutional and administrative law. He was conferred Senior designation in December 1991.
In 1996, he was appointed as an additional Judge of the Bombay High Court and in 1998, he became a permanent judge.
After his retirement from the Bombay High Court in 2008, he served as the chairperson of the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT) from 2009 to 2014.
Beyond his work in the courts, Justice Radhakrishnan was also a dedicated academic.
For over a decade, he taught constitutional and administrative law at New Law College and the University of Bombay's Department of Law. He also taught public international law and press law to LLM students.
During his judicial career, he earned a doctorate in Human Rights, a subject he continued to research and advocate for throughout his life.
"A good, learned, kind and spiritual man, supportive of good causes and helpful to junior colleagues. Everyone will miss him," recalled a Advocate Raju Moray, a close friend of the late judge.
