Justice Vikram Nath nominated Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority

His appointment takes effect from today.

Supreme Court judge, Justice Vikram Nath, has been nominated as the next Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

A notification about the nomination was issued on November 19, 2025.

His appointment will take effect from today, November 24, 2025.

The position was previously held by Justice Surya Kant, who was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) today.

The nomination was made by President of India Droupadi Murmu in exercise of powers conferred by Clause (b) of Section 3(2) of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, which empowers the President to nominate a sitting Supreme Court judge to serve as Executive Chairman of NALSA.

Justice Nath, who has served on the Supreme Court Bench since 2021, will supervise NALSA's mission of guiding the nation's legal aid system and offering competent and free legal services to those in need of the same.
