Justice JK Maheshwari appointed chairperson of Supreme Court Legal Services Committee

The nomination was made by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant in exercise of the powers conferred by Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.

Supreme Court Justice Maheshwari has been nominated as chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC).

A gazette notification intimating the development was issued on November 24 by the National Legal Services Authority.

The nomination of Justice Maheshwari was made by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.

Justice Maheshwari, who has been serving on the Supreme Court since 2021, will now head the SCLSC, which is responsible for providing free legal services to eligible litigants in matters before the Supreme Court.

The post was earlier held by Justice Surya Kant who was elevated as CJI on Monday.

In related development, Justice Vikram Nath was nominated as Executive Chairperson of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
