Finance Research GroupIndira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, is looking to hire researchers with minimum 1-year PQE to work in the areas of securities laws, broader financial markets, bankruptcy laws and company law for its Mumbai office.

Job Description

The person will be required to support research in law and economics on a full-time basis. The position will involve working with persons from varying backgrounds such as law, economics and management. It will also require working with databases, analysis and designing policy and regulatory interventions. It will provide exposure to cutting-edge research in finance.

Previously, the group has assisted the government in research, conceptualisation of policy and drafting of laws pertaining to the financial sector in India. Some examples of our work include:

1. contributing to the Bankruptcy Law Reforms Committee (2015) and the draft Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code;

2. contributing to the Report of the Working Group on building the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (2016);

3. building the FRG Insolvency Cases Dataset, an open-access data-set of all final orders passed by the NCLT under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016;

4. contributing to reports on key aspects of the Indian financial sector, such as the report of the Standing Council on international competitiveness of the Indian financial system (2013) and integration of the commodity spot and derivatives markets (2018).

The Finance Research Group has published papers on Indian financial regulation, financial markets, working of tribunals and regulatory governance in India in international law journals, and regularly publishes commentary on these aspects in leading news outlets.

It is an ideal position for practitioners looking to learn empirical legal skills, and gain experience in policy work while leveraging off their existing skill sets. It is an opening for those looking to foray into research-backed public policy areas.

The office functions on free and open source softwares like Linux, Latex, R and others. Previous experience is not required. However, if appointed, the candidate will be required to learn and use these softwares. The candidate must be willing to adapt to technology, work long hours and deliver quality products within defined timelines.
